The RYA Professional Practices & Responsibilities (PPR) course, is a new compulsory on-line course for new or revalidating RYA Commercial Endorsement holders.

From April 2012, commercial skippers and instructors will need to take this compulsory course even if you are already a commercial skipper revalidating your endorsement. If you hold an MCA Certificate of Competence as Office of the Watch, Master 200 or Master 500 you do not need to take the PPR course.

Whatever your job is on board, in the commercial world you are a professional seafarer. As such, you are no different from the captain of a cruise liner – you have a duty of care to crew, passengers, and other water users, and you will be held to account if things go wrong.

The RYA’s PPR course covers the legal framework you need to adhere to in your status as a commercial operator - whatever vessel you work on. The course helps you understand and execute your duty of care, and give you principles, guidance and techniques to make the right choices and decisions. The course is split into 4 sections:

  • Commercial environment - showing how you fit into the professional maritime world.
  • People – explaining the importance of correct manning, keeping your skills up to date and the safe management of commercial vessels.
  • Vessel – teaching about the compulsory carriage and maintenance of safety equipment and how to create and implement risk control and operating procedures.
  • Purpose – making sure your vessel is suitable and legal for the work you are carrying out, your obligations in protecting the environment, appropriate planning and situational awareness.

At the end of these training modules you must take an online assessment. When you pass, you will be sent a certificate of confirmation that must be included with your application or renewal for your commercial endorsement.

The online format means you can learn anytime, anywhere - so long as you have access to the internet.

RYA Interactive courses and exams are only sold through recognised RYA Training Centres that are authorised to offer e-learning courses. We were the first company to obtain RYA Interactive recognition in 2010 and we are proud to offer the full RYA Interactive course programme.

Unfortunatly the Safari web browser is not supported because this course uses Flash animation which is not supported on Safari. You will need to enable pop-ups in your web browser.
