This intensive 9-day fast track course combines both the Day Skipper shorebased and Day Skipper practical courses in one go. The course starts on a Saturday and runs through to the following Sunday meaning you need only take 5 days of vacation to complete this course.

The first four days will be spent ashore in our classroom covering the theoretical side of the syllabus followed by 5 days living aboard one of our training yachts where we will travel to different places each day giving you the opportunity to skipper short passages under instruction.

The course is a combination of continual assessment plus two written test papers. The first test is a Navigation paper that will be taken ashore on day 4 of your course. The second, a general knowledge paper, will be taken afloat during the practical part of the course.

The best skippers are highly competent and confident crew. If you have not crewed a sailing yacht before then you must enrol on a Competent Crew course or obtain equivalent crewing experience before attempting this course.

You are responsible for food and lodgings during the shore based part but full board and lodging is provided during the five practical days afloat.

By the end of this course, you should feel confident to skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day.

When you have successfully completed the course syllabus you will receive day skipper shorebased and practical completion certificates. If you have enjoyed your sailing tuition then after gaining further sailing experience you might like to consider advanced skippering by enrolling on one of our Coastal Skipper shorebased courses followed by a Coastal Skipper practical course.

What's included

The fee includes shorebased and practical tuition, RYA course pack, 5-nights/days accommodation (full board) for the practical part (Tuesday night through to Sunday afternoon). Meals and accomodation are not included during the shorebased part (Saturday to Tuesday evening) but several hotels, B&B's and restaurants are available within walking distance of the marina complex.

Restrictions

The minimum age is 14 years. Students under 18 years must be accompanied by an adult. To operate within the safety parameters of the life saving equipment on board the maximum chest or waist size (which ever is the greater) must be less than 50 inches (127cm). We are sorry but no smoking is allowed on-board.

Number on board

To ensure full participation by all, numbers will be limited to a maximum of 5 students per course (usually 4) who will be undertaking both skippering and crewing courses.

What to wear

Non-marking soft soled shoes (non black) or sailing boots (sorry but Wellington or garden boots are not suitable). Wet weather gear if you have any (we can supply some if you don't). A hat or cap. It can get chilly out on the water so several layers of clothing are best rather than fewer thick layers.

What to bring

Notepad, soft leaded pencils, pencil sharpener, rubber, Portland chart plotter and dividers. Sun block, sun glasses, camera, sleeping bag and pillow case (we provide a pillow), change of clothing, wash gear and bath towel, G15 log book if you have one. Please pack all items in a soft sports type bag that can be easily stowed

Other things you should know

If we have to cancel due to adverse weather conditions, you will be offered an alternative date. We recommend you take out holiday insurance to cover unforeseen circumstances, for example, having to cancel at a late date. Boating requires a degree of physical exertion so if you have any doubts concerning your fitness please make us aware. Please consult your pharmacist or doctor if you require seasickness medication. If you are taking a training course, please be aware that your instructor will need to be satisfied that you have demonstrated the appropriate level of competence before a course completion certificate can be awarded. Attending a course does not automatically result in a course completion certificate being issued. If for any reason you do not meet the required standard your instructor will provide you with an action plan identifying areas for improvement.
