The RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship course on-line is a basic introduction to navigation and seamanship.

The course is for you if you are a new or inexperienced skipper or crew, whether you're a sailor, a motor boater, a diver or a fisherman. There is something in it for everyone.

The online format means you can learn anytime, anywhere - so long as you have access to the internet.

There are no assessments to take with this course, just on-line exercises. When you have successfully completed all of the topics we will send you a course completion certificate. If you have enjoyed your course then you should consider taking the Day Skipper shorebased intensive course.

Previous experience

No previous experience required but some experience onboard a boat is desirable.

Duration

Approximately 6 to 10 hours of on-line study. You must complete the course within 12 months.

What's included?

Enrolment key to the on-line course at RYA Interactive, RYA course pack including paper charts, a portland plotter and a set of dividers, the RYA electronic chart plotter and a course hand book, support from an RYA Instructor in case you get stuck and discounts off further training courses.

Tuition

Tuition is provided by logging into the RYA Interactive web site using an enrolment key that we provide. You can then run the interactive web based tutorials which are split into topics. The Navigation courses also include traditional chart work exercises, so a set of paper charts and navigation instruments are included in the course fee so that you can put what you have learned into practice.

Support

If you get stuck, help is on hand via RYA Interactive's help system. Assistance is also available by email or over the telephone should you require help or assurance along the way.

Enrolling on a course

You must purchase an enrolment key from us that will grant you access to a specific course through our own customised area of RYA interactive. You can buy the key on-line through this web site 24/7, 365 days a year so you can start work on your course or take an exam right away. Just click on enrol button above to purchase your enrolment key. Instructions on how to login to RYA interactive and take the course are provided with the enrolment key. Some courses also require printed charts and other physical materials to complete a course. We will post these to you as soon as we have received your order.

Other things you will need

A Notepad or work book, soft leaded pencils (2B), pencil sharpener, rubber. The course fee includes access to an on-line version of the RYA Training Almanac that is used during chartwork exercises. A printed version of this publication, that is easier to read, can be purchased at the checkout after enroling on the course.

Other things you should know

Not all web browers are compatible with RYA Interactive. If you use a PC with Windows 95, NT or better, and you have Internet Explorer 6, 7 or 8, Firefox v3 or Safari v4 as your web browser, you should have no problem . Firefox on a Mac is also compatible. You will need to enable pop-ups in your web browser.
